    Objectives:  

    ▪ Definition of investigative journalism and its relevance. Investigative journalism as part of journalism.  

    ▪ Case studies.  

    ▪ Methods of investigative journalism.  

    ▪ Ethics and deontology of investigative journalism.  

    ▪ Journalism in democracy and in dictatorship.

    Competences:  

    ▪ Knowledge of investigative journalism and its problems.  

    ▪ Knowledge of case studies in Portugal and other countries, namely English-speaking countries.

    ▪  Learning how to prepare and accomplish an investigative reportage, in press and in television. 

    Syllabus:

    ▪ Definition of investigative journalism and its relevance.

    ▪ Methods of investigative journalism. Conventional and unconventional.

    ▪ Ethics, deontology and investigative journalism.

    ▪ The practice of (investigative) journalism in democracy and in dictatorship. 

    ▪ How to do an investigative reportage.

    ▪ The relation with sources.

    ▪ Construction of an investigative reportage. Press and television.

    ▪ Legal limits to investigative journalism.

    ▪ Case studies 

    Evaluation:

    Continual evaluation based upon the following elements:

    ▪ Presence and active participation in classes 25%

    ▪ Essays, tasks and group work   35%

    ▪ Final test or individual essay                               40%
