Overview
This module aims to explore the contemporary issues of race, ethnicity and migration through different sociological discourses and theories. It covers theoretical and empirical research on migration and on related issues of ethnicity, race, religion, gender, social stratification, education, inequality, labour market, poverty, citizenship and identity, media coverage and social networks both in national and international perspectives.
It addresses contemporary migration processes in the UK, Europe and around the world; the history of UK migration; analyses historical, economic and social factors underlying different types of inflows of migrants, including migrants from the EU, refugees and asylum seekers. It also covers debates on multiculturalism, and on the modes of immigrant socio-economic and cultural integration in a host society, examines attitudes to ethnic and racial minorities and migrants, and discusses different types of policy responses to migration, nationally and internationally.
