Overview
This module explores key texts and contexts of the modernist period. The module centres on the detailed studyof literary texts, but also explores intellectual cross-currents and interactions between literature, philosophy,film, and visual culture. It studies the relationship between modernism in the arts and the broader condition ofmodernity, exploring such topics as time, technology, the metropolis, primitivism, sex and sexuality,psychoanalysis and the dissociation of the self, and irrationality. Students will read literary texts alongsidemanifestoes and other source documents and will be encouraged to consider the development of a modernistaesthetic of shock, fragmentation, discontinuity and montage in both formal and cultural terms.Writers considered include Joyce, Eliot, Woolf, Pound, Lawrence and Beckett.
