Overview
This module aims to provide an introduction to the sociology of development by examining the relationship between the majority and minority world. Students will gain familiarity with basic concepts such as development and underdevelopment. The course will explore the ways in which theoretical perspectives have changed over time from modernisation theory, to theories of underdevelopment, to more contemporary alternative approaches including participatory development and sustainable development. The students’ understanding will be enhanced by an exploration of a variety of key issues including globalisation, colonisation, the debt crisis, aid, migration, gender and generation, urbanisation and rural development. The module contains a range of examples and case studies from Latin America, Asia and Africa.
