2nd Year Course/Lower DivisionCompetences and Skills that will be Acquired and Learning Results:
To know the structure, composition, processing, properties and performance of different families of materials and relationship among them.
To be able to select materials as a function of their applications in different engineering fields.
To know the more adequate standardized tests to evaluate properties and performance of materials, and to analyze the results.
Regarding general capabilities or skills, during the year, students will work:
- Ability to solve complex problems.
- Ability to look for, to understand and to discriminate the relevant information to take a decision.
- Ability to use multi-disciplinary knowledges to solve a problem.
- Ability to work in groups and distribute work to face up to complex problems.
Regarding student attitudes after the year, they should get:
- A collaborative attitude to get from other people information, skills and knowledge necessary to manufacture components with specified applications.Description of Contents/Course Description:
Study of materials: metallic, ceramic, polymers and composites.
Manufacturing and treating techniques of materials.
Structure of materials.
Mechanical testing of materials.
Conductor, semiconductor, isolating and magnetic materials: application in electric technology.
Materials performance.
Selection criteria.Learning Activities and Methodology:
Masterly classes, classes to solve doubts in reduced groups, student presentations, individual tutorship and personal work of the student; oriented to acquire theoretical knowledge (3 ECTS credits).
Laboratory classes, classes for solving problems in reduced groups; individual tutorship and personal work of the student; oriented to acquire practical knowledge related to subject program (3 ECTS credits).Assessment System:
Continuous evaluation will have three parts: (i) three individual exercises, during classes, with a 15% weight; (ii) three individual tests, during classes, with a 15% weight; (iii) laboratory practices, solving a questionnaire or test at the end, with a 10% weight.
