    DESCRIPTION

    An introductory laboratory course focusing on scientific inquiry and investigation of cell and molecular biology principles, use of laboratory equipment, and metric system measurements and conversions.
    Pre- and post-lab activities: Labs are an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the theories, organisms and processes that we discuss in lecture. To prepare you for each lab, you will complete a short pre-lab quiz that will evaluate class reading of the lab's goals and tasks.
    Post-lab assignments will assess your understanding of key observations and concepts covered in the lab activity and connect them to lecture content. Pre-lab activities will be completed individually on Collab, while post-lab activities will usually be completed as a group and handed in at the end of each lab activity.

    Session 8: Mitosis: Investigating root tip mitosis
    Session 9: Meiosis in anthers of eggplant
    Session 10: GENETICS: How to preserve genetic variability
    Session 11: DNA extraction (Do it yourself –DIY-)
    Session 12: Karyotyping

     

    STUDENT LEARNING/COURSE OUTCOMES

    -Stimulating curiosity and critical thinking and at the same time surprising and amusing the public by its contents from the world of science, technology, and the environment.
    -Learn about the light microscope and how to use it to enlarge the image of cells. Observe different cell types and review the main parts of a cell.
    - Microscopes and lenses. Use of light microscope
    - Prepare temporary slides for microscopic observation
    - Prokaryotic cells: environmental bacterial cultures
    - Unicellular eukaryotic cells: organisms in stagnant water
    - Vegetal eukaryotic cells: onion epithelium
    - Animal eukaryotic cells fly wings cells
    - Human eukaryotic cells: buccal epithelium
    - Use a light microscope to observe slides of prokaryotic cells, fungi, animals and unicellular algae
    - Differentiate eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
    - Recognize basic structures of the cell
    -Identify cell types and components of cell walls and membranes with the scanning electron microscope.
    -To use a technique called paper chromatography to separate chemical compounds of a mixture.
    - Prepare temporary slides of cells found in garlic root tip meristem tissue
    - Use a light microscope to observe, identify and draw root tip meristem cells in different stages of the cell cycle
    - Measure the sizes of some of these cells
    - Calculate the mitotic index for the garlic root tip tissue that you observe
    - Use a light microscope to observe mitosis slides from different kingdoms. Chromosome observation
    - Prepare temporary slides of follicular testes of grasshopper males/ anthers of eggplant
    - Use a light microscope to observe, identify and draw identify the main stages of meiosis.
    - Use a light microscope to observe meiosis slides from different kingdoms.
    - Identify the differences between mitosis and meiosis
    -isolate their own DNA and DNA from other organisms
    -To make a karyotyping using several templates to identify chromosome disorders.
