Overview
Course Objective
After finishing this course, the student:
- has an overview of the impact Christianity has had on European culture;
- is able to summarize how Christianity managed to obtain a secure position in the Roman Empire;
- is able to summarize how Christianity shaped medieval thought;
- is able to summarize how the reformation forced Europeans to rethink church-state relationships as well as concepts like unity and diversity;
- is able to summarize how the Enlightenment provoked believers to debate the core of Christianity;
- is able to summarize how the rise of the Nation State forced churches to rethink their role in history and to rethink their contributions to national identity;
- is able to summarize how modernity challenges traditional beliefs;
- is able to summarize how European culture influenced the development of Christian identity.Course Content
This course is an introduction in the history of Christianity. Its focus will be on cultural history and on the influence of Christian thought and practices on European culture and vice-versa.
