  • Overview

    COURSE OBJECTIVE
This course introduces major debates in global history that have bearing on our understanding of current world affairs, such as inequality, climate change, migration, and authoritarianism.

    COURSE CONTENT
Each part of the course departs from a debate on current world affairs. It then introduces the origins of the issue in global history and the debate around it, focusing on two influential explanations (for example, cultural versus structural reasons for the so-called Great Divergence between economic development in China and Western Europe). In the process, students become familiar with the global history perspective and the principles of historiography; begin to learn critically analysing both historical and current-affairs texts; and practice formulating their arguments in written and spoken academic English.

    TEACHING METHODS
Lectures, independent reading, group discussions and in-class exercises.

    TYPE OF ASSESSMENT
Written papers for each part of the course (75%), in-class performance (25%).
