Geology

This course aims to help students acquire knowledge related to the origin of rocks and soils, its mineral composition, the alterations they suffered due to natural and anthropogenic causes, its use as construction materials, foundation materials, engineered barriers, and as materials involved in environmental hazards.

Course Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, students should be able to:

I. Identify environmental and engineering issues, where geology plays an important role.

II. Conceptualize the principles of tectonic plates, its effects on soil morphology and the behavior of geological materials.

III. Identify the most important rock-forming minerals and soils, and recognize their chemical and physical properties.

IV. Describe and classify rocks and solid rocks by using the standard parameters that would help deliver opinions concerning its use as construction materials, foundations and engineered barriers.

V. Describe and classify residual and sedimentary soils by using the standard parameters that would help deliver opinions concerning its use as construction materials, foundations and engineered barriers.

VI. Identify engineering problems where groundwater and subsoil water flow levels play an important role.

VII. Objectively assess threat and risk indicators associated with the behavior of rocks and soils.
