Overview
2. Descripción de la asignatura.
In an increasingly globalized world, the importance of international trade of goods,
services and ideas is evident. Even though are arguments against liberalized trade,
it has been assured that, in modern times, trade plays an important role in the
economy of the states and that it constitutes a positive factor for the sustainable
development of their societies and the general welfare of their people. For centuries
nations have purchased and sold their goods from one another.
The transportation of goods is a key factor for the success of international trade.
Along with land transportation, maritime transportation is widely used in the
transportation of goods; millions of tons of goods are transported by sea yearly.
With the purpose of increasing its trade and, ultimately, of promoting the welfare of
its people, in the last decade Colombia has increased the signing of free trade
agreements with countries such as USA, Canada, South Korea, Cuba, European
countries and Latin American countries.
Taking into account that Colombia has two seas, that it has important ports of imports
and exports such as Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta and that international
trade and maritime and port activities are intertwined commercial activities that
generate employment and require more qualified professionals suited to perform
their jobs, it is fundamental that our students are educated in these areas of
knowledge.
