Description
This course introduces students to the study of literature in Spanish and presents the basic skills for literary analysis.
The student will acquire the terminology and critical methods to produce informed readings of various genders.
The course will also introduce basic concepts of literary theory.
The discussion, assignments, and papers will be in Spanish.
Objectives
1. Introduce students to different genres: prose, poetry, and drama.
2. Provide the students the concepts and methods needed to describe and analyze literary texts in Spanish.
3. Expose students to basic theoretical concepts and approaches to literary texts.
Methodology
In this course the theoretical concepts are introduced along with the reading of the literary texts that better present each approach to literary analysis.
Contents
1. Introduction: An approach to the question What’s literature and its constitutive elements.
2. Study basic terms and vocabulary associated with literary analysis: literary figures, tropes, symbols.
3. Presentation of different genres, its characteristics and mayor historical periods of Hispano-American literature.
4. Introduction to basic theoretical approaches to literary texts.
5. Study different forms of lyrics and its elements: rhythm, rhyme, and metrics.
