Internships & Experiential Learning -Florence University of the Arts and Apicius International School of Hospitality

The Florence Internships & Experiential Learning summer program at the Florence University of the Arts and Apicius International School of Hospitality (FUA) allows students to gain real-world experience in a variety of fields. Student will follow either an Internship or an Experiential Learning course. Placements are available for students at varying levels of Italian language proficiency from Beginner to Advanced.


  • Internships are worth the equivalent of 3 U.S. semester credits.
  • Students will be placed to work at a local business in Florence where they actively assist professionals in fulfilling daily tasks and chores.
  • Students do not receive academic instruction, but learn by performing tasks.
  • Students will work about 20 hours per week, and evening and weekend shifts may be required depending on placement.
  • Additional application materials are required for an internship placement. Students will submit a Cover Letter and Resume as well as any other materials pertinent to the desired position followed by a Skype interview.
  • Some placements require an Italian language proficiency test.
  • All internships are unpaid.
Experiential Learning Courses:
  • Experiential Learning courses are worth 6 credits and will incur a supplementary fee for the additional tuition.
  • Courses are taught in English. No Italian language experience is required for this program.
  • In addition to regular lecture hours, students will be involved in learning by doing through real projects and integration with the local population in order to remove cultural and learning barriers as well as to develop a strong likelihood for success in life.
  • State-of-the-art facilities give students incredible hands-on learning experiences with professional grade equipment and technology.
  • The Experiential Learning hours are fully supervised by instructors who track students step by step during their learning experience, monitor and advise according to student needs, and support student initiative.
  • Some courses may require lab fees which are to paid directly to the university.
  • Courses will be taught by local and international faculty.
  • Classmates are international students, the majority of whom are North American.
Upon program completion, students will receive a transcript issued directly from the Florence University of the Arts (FUA). Students requiring a U.S. transcript will have the option to request a supplemental transcript from the University of South Florida (USF), who serves as the U.S. School of Record for ISA programs held at the FUA. Gap students, 18 years old and older, are also eligible for this program.

Minimum GPA

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.75.

Minimum Admissions Prerequisites

There is no language prerequisite for this program.

Students must be at least 18 years old by the program start date.

Students must submit a self-disclosure conduct information form and a School of Record transcript request form. Additional details will be provided after gaining access to the ISA Student Portal.

Students with a cumulative GPA below 2.75 may be considered for acceptance. They must also submit one letter of recommendation and a statement of purpose.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.

Availability of courses is based on enrollment numbers. All students should seek pre-approval for alternate courses in the event of last minute class cancellations
