If your academic program in Italy is 91 days or more, you are REQUIRED to obtain a student visa from the Italian Government.
You MUST apply for your student visa through the Italian Consulate with jurisdiction over your state of your permanent residence or university (see link below). You should consult your Consulate General's website immediately to obtain a student visa application, a list of requirements, and to verify the application process and timetable. Most consulates require in person appearance. Some Consulates require appointments to be made and have limited spots
If you are not able to travel to your Consulate General in person, you may apply at one of the Honorary Vice Consulates operating in the consular district. To find their addresses go to your Consulate General's Home Page and click on "consular network".
Please refer to your Consulate General's website for Study visa fee (typically 50-70 USD). For study more than 90 days you will then need to apply for a residency card (permesso di soggiorno) at the local post office within the first 8 days of arrival in Italy. This along with your visa will allow you to stay in Italy for the duration of your studies. There is a fee associated with the residency card and your on-site directors will assist you with this process.
Students may enter Italy for academic program that are 90 days and UNDER without the corresponding student visa. Semester programs in Milan are typically 90 days and do not require a student visa. However, a Presence Declare must be completed within the first 8 days of arrival in Italy. There is a fee associated with the Presence Declare and your on-site directors will assist you with this process.
If you are not a U.S. citizen, you will need to check with your local embassy or consulate to verify entry requirements for Italy.

Non-emergency services (e.g. renewal of U.S. passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad and notarials) provided by the American Citizen Services Unit at Embassy of the United States in Rome are available through an online appointment system.
