Las Alpujarras

Location: Spain

Las Aplujarras refers to a culturally and geographically exceptional region of the South-facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada, in Southern Spain. This region contains the highest populated village in Europe--Trevélez at 4,840 feet?and the average altitude of the villages visited on this excursion is over 4,000 feet.

On this excursion, students will gain familiarity with several local products (arts and crafts, jarapa rugs, fig and nut breads, local hams and cheeses), learning in turn about how local alpujarreños make a living farming and selling souvenirs. Students will also learn about the different civilizations which have inhabited this area over several thousand years, including pre- Romans, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Christians down to the present day. This excursion is typically paired with the excursion to Nerja, where students can see the vast difference in distinct climatic zones?from high sierra to tropical coastal?span the mere 20 miles of distance from Capileira to Nerja.
