The Université Catholique de Lille is a prestigious actor in the French higher education system. The UCL is a private, non-profit university, and its educational philosophy is based on excellence, humanist values, achievement, and solidarity. The campus is about a 15 minute walk from the city center, giving you easy access to all that Lille has to offer. The UCL is accredited by the French Ministry of Education (Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche).

While the Catho is a historically Catholic university, its curriculum, campus life, and student activities are secular in nature. The faculty and student body are comprised of people from all backgrounds, and diversity is embraced. The atmosphere of the campus is similar to universities in the U.S., with a sprawling campus, beautiful ancient buildings, and green spaces. The Catho de Lille also houses a central library, a hospital complex, a sports complex, an arts center, and more.

Study Abroad Program Description

Delve deeply into French language and an elective of your choice while studying in Lille this summer. Elective courses cover a variety of topics, including French culture, art history, business, sciences, international communication, and more. Most of the elective courses are taught in English, with a select few of them taught in French. You may select another science/engineering elective in your field of study rather than the French course, though most students will take a French course since options for this are limited. This program is available to you no matter your language level, and all French language courses are taught in French. These courses are taught to international students from around the world, and course instructors are from the Université Catholique de Lille.

Back to back sessions of this program are available. You may select both sessions when submitting your online application and will receive a discount from the combined price of the sessions. For more information about this option, please contact your France Site Specialist.

Course Availability

The course list below indicates the proposed courses for the upcoming Summer session. The host university has confirmed these courses for the Summer and they are the most accurate and up to date.

Course Selection

  • You are required to select 1 morning course and 1 afternoon course as well as 2 alternate courses
  • The course listings on the ISA website are a sample of the types of courses that are typically offered at the Université Catholique de Lille. Courses and course hours of instruction are subject to change and some courses will likely be different once courses are updated for the Summer.
  • Eligibility for courses may be subject to a placement exam and/or prerequisites

Course Credit

  • Credits earned vary according to the policies of your home institution. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, you must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by your home institutions, for the duration of the program.
  • Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university.
  • The contact hour at the host university is 60 minutes. The ISA Cover Letter that will accompany your transcript upon completion of your program will reflect the adjusted U.S. 50-minute contact hour. Please discuss credit transfer with your home university prior to departure.

Transcripts

  • The transcript from the Université Catholique de Lille will reflect ECTS and contact hours. Please be in touch with your home university regarding credit transfer for this program.
  • Each morning course will include an intercultural communications component, which takes up about 10 contact hours from the total hours for that course.

Language Placement

  • Enrollment in French courses is determined by the results of a language placement exam administered by Université Catholique de Lille. Please note that your performance on the placement exam may not reflect the number of semesters of language instruction you've already completed at your home university. We strongly suggest that students who are trying to place into any level of language beyond true beginning prepare for the language placement exam by reviewing previous coursework.

Accessibility & Accommodations

With our wide portfolio of program types and locations, we’re confident there is a suitable, accessible program for each student.

Securing accommodations abroad can take time, so we ask that those with requests inform ISA early in the advising process. We recommend reaching out to your Program Manager or our Accessibility Team (accessibilityteam@worldstrides.com) to discuss your accessibility needs or accommodations abroad.

Destination Information

Our diversity pages for each ISA destination include information on Indigenous communities, languages, race and ethnicity, religion, LGBTQIA+, and disability access. We hope it will help when reflecting upon and contextualizing intersectionality in your host community.

Identity Blog

ISA offers students the opportunity to blog about their experiences abroad from their own diverse perspectives. These posts can be found on the ISA Student Blog, and interested students should email diversity@studiesabroad.com for more information.

Funding

All students should have the opportunity to study abroad. To help make this a reality, ISA offers a variety of scholarships to help cover your study abroad costs. To learn more about our scholarship opportunities, check out our scholarships & grants page!

If you receive financial aid from your home university, you can likely use those funds for study abroad, as well. Speak with your home university’s financial aid office to learn about your options. Check out steps for using financial aid.

Housing

Living in ISA housing will give you the opportunity to experience aspects of the French lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor to Lille. With an open-mind and flexibility, the experience of living in another culture can be highly rewarding.

We strive to match your housing preferences with our available accommodations, however, housing preference requests cannot be guaranteed.

Student Residence

The student residences are located off campus, though they are well served by bus and metro. You will have a single bedroom; bathrooms and kitchenettes may be either self-contained or shared. The kitchenettes include hot plates, fridges, and microwaves. Pillows, bed sheets, and blankets are provided in each bedroom. Dorms have internet access, and there are laundry facilities on the premises as well.

You should leave your room in the same state in which you found it. If there are any costs associated with cleaning or repairing your student residence, you will be responsible for these additional expenses. These expenses must be paid for you to receive your transcript.
