Study Abroad Program Description
The Community Health & Medical Spanish program is taught at one of Peru's highest rated universities, the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH). This program offers students interested or involved with health care, the opportunity of experiencing cultural immersion while acquiring the Spanish language and engaging in hands-on field work in community health. Students will be able to combine Medical Spanish classes while working alongside Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia's physicians in clinics and health centers in low-income areas
You must have an advanced Spanish language level (4 or more college-level Spanish courses) as both courses are taught in Spanish and they combine field work and classroom experience.
Medical Spanish - This course covers vocabulary and tools for effective communication in the health sector. You will be expected to understand specific terminology in order to follow a physician's communication and proper diagnosis for their patients.
Community Health - The UPCH defines community health as a branch of medicine concerned with the health of the members of a community. This track emphasizes the early diagnosis of disease, the recognition of environmental and occupational hazards to good health and the prevention of disease in the community. It provides comprehensive health services ranging from preventive, curative to rehabilitative services. It focuses on the health problems of communities, as well as on those of individuals who are part of the community.
Courses at the UPCH are taught by local university faculty.
