Academic Information

  • Sample Courses & Syllabi

The courses listed below are only a sample of what the university offers. Please see the full Queen Mary Module Catalog linked below for additional courses.

Requests for sample syllabi can be made to the England Program Manager.

  • Course Credit

Students are required to take exactly 60 U.K. credits per session. Per Queen Mary, 15 U.K. credits are considered equivalent to 4 U.S. semester credits/6 quarter units.

The transcript from QMUL will reflect UK credits for each course. Please be in touch with your U.S. university regarding credit transfer for this program.
Classes are lecture style with a seminar (smaller group) following the lecture. Focus is on individual study.
English & Drama classes are the most competitive to register for at the university. Students should be prepared to select modules from other departments to fulfill the full-time student requirement.

  • Using the Module Catalog

When filtering the courses in the Queen Mary Module Catalog make sure the Associates filter is always set to "YES". This will make sure that every class you are looking at is open to study abroad students. You can further narrow your search by using the Semester filters (1= Fall & 2=Spring) or the Level filters (4=Freshman/Sophomore, 5=Junior, 6=Senior). Level 7 is graduate level and cannot be taken by undergraduate students.

  • Course Level Recommendations

ISA offers course level recommendations for the courses listed in the Queen Mary Module Catalog. Please note that the course level recommendations are based on the Queen Mary module level classifications of a 4, 5, or 6 level, which correspond with the three year bachelor's degree cycle. Courses classified as level 5 and level 6 are considered upper division and recommended for juniors and seniors with 3000- and 4000-level of experience in the subject. These Queen Mary and ISA recommendations are intended to facilitate the determination of course equivalencies by advisors and credential evaluators at participants' U.S. home institutions.

If a student does not have the necessary pre-requisite experience, Queen Mary will not approve them for the course. Students will then provide additional module choices.

Accessibility & Accommodations

With our wide portfolio of program types and locations, we’re confident there is a suitable, accessible program for each student.

Securing accommodations abroad can take time, so we ask that those with requests inform ISA early in the advising process. We recommend reaching out to your Program Manager or our Accessibility Team (accessibilityteam@worldstrides.com) to discuss your accessibility needs or accommodations abroad.

Destination Information

Our diversity pages for each ISA destination include information on Indigenous communities, languages, race and ethnicity, religion, LGBTQIA+, and disability access. We hope it will help when reflecting upon and contextualizing intersectionality in your host community.

Identity Blog

ISA offers students the opportunity to blog about their experiences abroad from their own diverse perspectives. These posts can be found on the ISA Student Blog, and interested students should email diversity@studiesabroad.com for more information.

Funding

All students should have the opportunity to study abroad. To help make this a reality, ISA offers a variety of scholarships to help cover your study abroad costs. To learn more about our scholarship opportunities, check out our scholarships & grants page!

If you receive financial aid from your home university, you can likely use those funds for study abroad, as well. Speak with your home university’s financial aid office to learn about your options. Check out steps for using financial aid.

Housing

Living in university dorms will give you the opportunity to experience aspects of the British student lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average tourist. Uncovering the uniqueness of your surroundings will help you to feel right at home. You will commute to class as most locals do, via the underground (aka the Tube), the overground, public bus, or walking. With an open and adaptable mind, the experience of living in another culture can be highly rewarding.

We strive to match your housing preferences with our available accommodations, however, housing preference requests cannot be guaranteed.

Westminster & King's Dorms

Students attending Westminster or King's College will live in independent or university sponsored resident halls located off campus. It is common for students to experience 30-45 minute commutes between their dorm and campus. The dorms offer shared kitchens on each floor, and laundry facilities are typically available for an additional cost.

You will pay a $300 refundable security deposit if living in this ISA housing option. ISA may retain some, or all, of this deposit in the event of damage to property, or if utility usage exceeds the allotted monthly amount.

Semester & Academic Year students studying at Westminster can expect housing to be allocated based upon the campus(es) in which their courses are taught. Students enrolled in two or more courses taught on the Harrow Campus can anticipate residing on the Harrow Campus located in Northwest London. Please contact the London Program Manager for additional information.

Queen Mary, Roehampton & Kingston Dorms

The residence halls at Roehampton, Queen Mary and Kingston are located on campus. ISA does not have control over which dorm you are assigned to by the university. These dorms have shared kitchens on each floor, and laundry facilities are typically available for an additional cost.

You will pay a $300 refundable security deposit if living in this ISA housing option. ISA may retain some, or all, of this deposit in the event of damage to property, or if utility usage exceeds the allotted monthly amount.

Independent Housing

You may elect to secure housing independently. If you select this option, you will receive a discount equal to the housing portion of the program price.

Excursions

THERE’S MORE TO DISCOVER WITH ISA

ISA excursions allow you to explore the timeless, quaint, and historical landscape of the United Kingdom that you may not have the chance to visit on your own. While abroad, you will have the chance to go on day trips and optional trips. The locations below are a sample of included and optional excursions that have run in the past. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to take part in cultural activities offered by the ISA resident staff while in London. Please know that these are subject to change.

Brighton & Seven Sisters

Breathtaking and endless sea views await at Seven Sisters, a panoramic series of white chalk cliffs prominently positioned along the English Channel. Spend the morning walking the lush green pastures atop the cliffs or head down to the rocky beaches below to explore the coastline and cliffs at sea level. Travel West along the sea to the popular coastal town of Brighton. Brighton is known for several things, including being one the cultural and LGBT capitals of England, inspiration for famous artists and musicians, and its architecture. Some UK polls place it as the happiest and 'coolest' (not a reference to temperature!) city in England, and its name is undoubtedly among the world's most recognizable beach towns.

Stonehenge & Bath

The monument of Stonehenge is one of Britain's oldest Neolithic remnants and easily one of world's most famous sites. It is situated rather mysteriously amidst several hundred burial mounds and at great distances from any logical source for such large stones. After visiting Stonehenge, head northwest towards Bath, an ancient Roman town most famous for the baths constructed here over two millennia ago to take advantage of natural hot springs. Aside from the springs, Bath was home to many famous writers, poets, and celebrities, including the much-beloved novelist Jane Austen.

Windsor Castle

The town of Windsor is an unparished area in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire, England. It is widely known as the site of Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British Royal Family. Windsor Castle itself is the oldest continuously used royal residence in the world. While at Windsor Castle take witness to the Changing of the Guard ceremony, visit the burial sites of Charles I and Queen Elizabeth II, relive the pomp and circumstance of the royal weddings, or simply wander the historic grounds.

Cultural Activities in England

The ISA on-site team encourages you to explore culture of England in and around your host city. The team facilitates this by offering a robust calendar of events that showcases what makes England special. These activities vary each term, and previous offerings have included visits to Camden Town, a show at The Globe Theatre, River Thames boat tour, stroll through Borough Market, and a tour of the Tower of London.
